I'LL BE YOUR MIRROR 2: ART AND MEDIA

By now, the border between art and mass media is more and more fleeting, not only considering the languages used, but above all, in relation to the kind of vision. For a long time now, in facts, the same glance and the same psychological mechanisms seem to be used to structure and convey messages. A subtle game of closeness and distance, between empathy and event, presentation and representation. Let's take, for example, Nam Goldin's photo diaries, with their outsiders' everyday life put in scene. Glimpses, foregrounds, close up of real persons described in their most intimate moments, when the emotion permeates the atmosphere. The American artist pretends to be a "real" witness. Her sincerity consists of her emotional involvement and in her time spent with the people portrayed. Their life is her life, the camera is nothing else but a continuation of her eyes. "I'll be your mirror", she claims. The objective goes inside the houses, takes pictures of intimacy and real life, like in reality shows and truth format. Then, we have various artists' raids between private and public, between testimony, interception and stalking. Vanessa Beecroft changes her first peep-hole intrusions into the setting of a statuesque vulnerability really cool. , Lüthi also declares. With the Swiss artist, the attitude changes: confessional, theatrical, narcissistic, diva-like playing to the crowd, ("You are not the only who is lonely", "Lüthi also cries for you"... ). He is the idol of a community bound up with opinions and consumer goods. In a society of images and icons, the star is someone who is able to attract people's attention around an event in which they can take part. An ephemeral link building identity: the individual loneliness and pain find a legitimating correspondence in the star and in the ritual of public confession, without asking for real social intervention.
"I'll be your mirror"
With the Australian Ron Mueck, instead, we are in front of a super sight, which takes possession of the prerogatives of touch to increase the perception we have of the human. Mueck's giantism seems to mirror the despair of many victims of the "media overexposure", people who have found, thanks to protagonism, the obsessive audience persecution instead of love. This is the other aspect of Lüthi's star attitude and his and Goldin's confessions. A space where the private is public, without empathy. Mueck's giants and Lilliputians are ordinary beings without relationships, without qualities, realer than the reality itself, suspended between life and death, the self perception and the perception of the contest. They are incredible accumulations of imperfections, clues and evidences of a psychic crime scene, a crime scene needing to be patrolled in detail, like in CSI.
Than we have the reports and the documentaries by Jarr and other committed artist, unfortunately often too similar to beautiful reportages or tragedy collections.
A big part of art takes the facts and their transmission as model. Without talking about Baudrillard and Debord, how many times we find exhibitions simply showing the documentation of events, situations, real histories to think on? As if the artistic operation consisted in selection, editing and exposition. As if the brilliant idea were not finding the gravity law, but Newton's apple itself. And so many times you think to have find a revelation, just because you have given more attention to something!

I'LL BE YOUR MIRROR 2: ARTE E MEDIA

"I'll be your mirror", dichiara anche Lüthi. Con lo svizzero l'atteggiamento è diverso: confessionale, teatrale, narcisistico, divistico ("Lüthi piange anche per te", "You are not the only who is lonely"...).

THE INSECT AS DEVICE

Working to my new project, I found these  machine insects by Scott Bain: take a look!

"MICROMACHINA examines what makes the insect world tick, and considers our attempts to control nature and the consequences. Humanity’s blatant disregard for nature, where profit comes before life, will ultimately be our undoing. Pesticides, herbicides, genetic modification and massive urban expansion push the fine balance of life toward disaster. There has to be a point, when mother nature will say ‘too far’, and rid the earth of its biggest pest... us.

Once the stuff of science fiction, today flying and crawling insects are used by the military, fitted with audio and video devices. This exhibition experiments using real taxidermy beetles as mechanised shells, to show how we mistreat our fellow inhabitants, forcing them to do our will.

When the planet’s soul is gone, all that’s left is cogs and pipes. You won’t see insects like these on the Discovery Channel."

L'INSETTO COME MACCHINA
