THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT PROJECT

After 6 months of hard work, here you are the last elements of  the Butterfly Effect Project. At the end, the spiral device - the most complex, the most Leonardian, made with cicada wings instead of butterfly wings - maybe seems a bit isolated from the others, but I really love it!

A special thanks also in this case to my friend Marco

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT PROJECT

BUTTERFLY EFFECT PROJECT, WORK IN PROGRESS

Here you are some images of my new project about the Butterfly Effect, a (almost finished) work in progress composed of little wood devices with real insect wings and embroideries on silkpaper and Nepalese paper. The machine models are inspired to the ones by Leonardo da Vinci, while the embroideries might be considered the dreams of scientific schemes. Can we be the dominators of our Planet if we can't be sure of anything in this data magma? How is the (metaphorical) beat of wings that might generate change? Which is the connection between Micro and Macrocosmos?

A big thanks to my friend Marco, who is helping me to correct the strange howlers that an ignorant in mechanics like me may create.

BUTTERFLY EFFECT PROJECT, WORK IN PROGRESS

BISTON BETULARIA (work in progress)

Biston, Biston, the funny little butterfly we have always found in History and Science books at school, the one that changed color like a kitsch souvenir to adapt to an habitat with or without coke firms around. A beautiful example of the relationship between Man and Nature and...how you may put yourself in trouble if you decide to use lichens to make big drawings! It is full of  musks, moulds and lichens, but to find them with the features you need is not easy!:/

FELIX GONZALEZ TORRES

THE MAN OF SMALL THINGS

Felix Gonzalez Torres, the man from whom everybody would have accepted candies, the man of still clocks and unmade beds, has the worth of having tried  to give a emotional value to serial objects with a social and political aim. We have been told many times: the object, if we not consider the work needed to produce it, the use value, the production and the producer, is an alien thing with a consumerist purpose. By the way, if it's true that the product in itself has got no traces of individuality and subjective expression, its consume may generate affective and symbolical value, a value that changes from person to person, even if it has got some common elements. Torres plays with this emotional "unity in differences" in using things, changing ordinariness into everyday life and the common into familiar. If marketing experts attract us with cliché, restyling and emotional gadgets, Torres brings daily thingS, important for our culture, to create  short circuit  on trite remarks and  look for new political and social perspectives without rhetoric (even if sometimes he may be so gushing or over sentimental). His objects are ideas of objects, in which everyone might recognize his own objects and decode his/her life. You may find them in aseptic rooms, in open space as billboards, or they can be curtains to cross made of beads as red as blood, or take away sky passports, or candies to taste, but they always change private stories into collective, universal tales. It's real, the repetition of the same images generates addiction and indifference, it's true, advertising charms and convinces playing with our instincts and sensations of uneasiness and inadequateness, but its persuasion is based on laid down times and the unambiguous and redundant use of information. Even if the explanation of his works is always (too strongly) fundamental, Torres, instead, selects single elements, isolating them from the context and lets the bystander's imagination free. Usually, the artists put us in front of persons or strongly expressive simulacra to make us impact emotions. This way, the viewer for a moment is like a  voyager in a foreign country. He/she feel lost, comes into contact wit the Other, but he/she is always aware of living far from there. Gonzalez-Torres, instead, makes possible for us to be in his shoes.

FELIX GONZALEZ TORRES
