About Muta (Molting)

Project for a temporary site specific installation at Sempione Park (Park of Castello Sforzesco), Milan.

The installation is composed by several turns made with hollow cubes and parallelepipeds of bamboo, clinging to the trunks of the trees and twisting sinuously in the water. The project visually refers to natural structures in the park and the spiral growth of the trees, and ambiguously deals with both the remains of a totemic, chthonic animal and the fractal growth of the city, against which nature is fighting a trench war. It talks about Lombardy, with its nature tamed and its channeled underground rivers, which periodically reappear with the rains.

The work can be traced back to the remains and debris left by the animals during the molting, therefore does not qualify itself as a single unit, but rather as a series of fragments that refer to a lost original form.

As expression of the relationships between a city and its surrounding territory, from time to time it appears as a kind of benevolent genius loci or a colonizing stifling element.

The sharp and fluid lines interact with the liquid nature of the place, offering themselves as tunnels and perches for small animals and birds.

The fence surrounding the pond cages the installation like an animal in a pen, preserving it with the same ambiguity we guard the protected species in the zoos.

The long making process of the installation, consisting of modules (cubes), recalls Design, manufacturing, technical reproducibility, drawn to the rhythms of manual labor and nature.

FOR ALL CRISES BRING PROGRESS

"Let's not pretend that things will change if we keep doing the same things. A crisis can be a real blessing to any person, to any nation. For all crises bring progress.

Creativity is born from anguish, just like the day is born form the dark night. It's in crisis that inventive is born, as well as discoveries, and big strategies. Who overcomes crisis, overcomes himself, without getting overcome. Who blames his failure to a crisis neglects his own talent, and is more respectful to problems than to solutions. Incompetence is the true crisis.

The greatest inconvenience of people and nations is the laziness with which they attempt to find the solutions to their problems. There's no challenge without a crisis. Without challenges, life becomes a routine, a slow agony. There’s no merit without crisis. It's in the crisis where we can show the very best in us. Without a crisis, any wind becomes a tender touch. To speak about a crisis is to promote it. Not to speak about it is to exalt conformism. Let us work hard instead.

Let us stop, once and for all, the menacing crisis that represents the tragedy of not being willing to overcome it."

Albert Einstein

PANTA REI

Which shape has change? How is the beat of wings that generates it? Everything flows while in our mind time rolls and unrolls itself up. How might we be in the moment, live the moment- with identity, with consciousness, if we are part of a stream, of a complex web?
