From March 11th to April 2nd, 2017 in the Spazio Ratti in Como will take place the Italian stop of the Art Biennale JCE Jeune Création Européenne, with 56 artists coming from 7 European countries.

The city of Como has been long engaged in the promotion and value enhancement of young contemporary artists and in 2013 the city joined the JCE Biennale, a project that has been developed and promoted over the past 15 years by the French city of Montrouge.

As part of this partnership, the Department of Culture has selected nationwide, 8 Italian artists under 35 years of age who have entered the circuit of the 2015-2017 Biennale, along with the other 48 artists chosen by the other partner cities: Montrouge (France) Hjørring (Denmark), Wroclaw (Poland), Cesis (Latvia), Figueres (Spain), Amarante (Portugal). 

Each adhering city promoted, through prestigious cultural organizations or institutions, a national selection of 8 young artists who use different expressions of contemporary art.

This Como event, organized by the Department of Culture, is sponsored by the Lombardy Region and the GAI Association for the Circuit of the Young European Creation.

Dall'11 marzo al 2 aprile 2017 lo Spazio Ratti a Como ospita la tappa italiana della Biennale d’Arte Contemporanea Giovane Creazione Europea - JCE Jeune Création Européenne, dopo l’esposizione in Francia, Danimarca, Lettonia e Polonia, per proseguire in Spagna e Portogallo.

La rassegna vede la partecipazione di 56 artisti, provenienti da 7 Paesi europei, che si esprimono con differenti linguaggi: pittura, scultura, installazione, fotografia e video art.

L’evento nella sua tappa italiana è curato da Veronica Vittani e Francesca Testoni e gode del patrocinio della Regione Lombardia, del GAI Associazione per il Circuito Giovani Artisti Italiani e del contributo tecnico dell’azienda Menphis spa.

Gli 8 artisti italiani under 35, che partecipano alla manifestazione sono: Giulia Berra, Tania Brassesco & Lazlo Passi Norberto, Juri Ceccotti, Giulia Fumagalli, Matteo Galvano, Giovanni Longo, Federico Scarchilli. La loro selezione è stata realizzata dall’Assessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Como attraverso il concorso “Co.Co.Co.Como Contemporary Contest 2015”, con il contributo di una giuria composta da Flaminio Gualdoni, storico dell’arte e curatore; Elena Isella, storica dell'arte e curatrice; Claudio Grillone, Responsabile Ufficio Creatività del Comune di Milano e Fabbrica del Vapore; Salvatore Marsiglione, gallerista; Veronica Vittani, Responsabile settore Cultura, Comune di Como.

Storia della Biennale

JCE Jeune Création Européenne viene ideata nel 2000 dalla città francese di Montrouge al fine di creare opportunità di condivisione e confronto fra gli scenari artistici dell’Unione Europea. Fra gli obiettivi principali intende sostenere la rete fra le città che promuovono il lavoro di giovani artisti emergenti, contribuire a scoprire nuovi talenti e a difendere la libera circolazione d’idee.

Il principio ispiratore della JCE è quello di offrire un’occasione di visibilità per gli artisti emergenti attraverso l’esposizione delle proprie opere in una mostra collettiva biennale itinerante nei paesi europei partner, coadiuvata da supporti significativi quali residenze artistiche, un catalogo e un sito internet pensato come una galleria virtuale evolutiva.

La città di Como, da tempo impegnata nella promozione e nella valorizzazione di giovani artisti prende parte a questa iniziativa dal 2013 e partecipa all’edizione in corso (2015-2017) con le seguenti città europee: Montrouge (Francia), Hjørring (Danimarca), Wrocław (Polonia), Cēsis (Lettonia), Figueres (Spagna), Amarante (Portogallo).

All’inaugurazione, sabato 11 marzo alle 17, saranno presenti Etienne Lengereau e Gabrielle Fleury rispettivamente Sindaco eAssessore alla Cultura di Montrouge, Andrea Ponsini curatore e coordinatore generale della Biennale e numerosi artisti coinvolti nell’esposizione.

Oak galls and yarns; embroidery on cardboard

For the Museo Municipal Amadeo De Souza Cardoso Giulia Berra (Cremona, Italy, 1985) presents a project strictly connected with architecture that deals both with the contest of Amarante and with the social-economic situation of Portugal in the period of the Artist Residence. It is an utopic dimension, where the references to Nature become aspirations of changing and rebirth.

Between the granite arches a galaxy of oak galls, collected in the city Park, is developed. Galls are “pearls of wood”, caused by plant parasites, that find in these abnormal outgrowths the perfect condition to complete their life cicle. Connected by the web, they become a constellation of planets, a metaphor of the Man/Nature relationship.

On the walls we have instead two panels of azulejos, that present a raffia-on-cardboard- embroideried motif of cicicada spoils. If usually the Tale of the Cicada and the Ant refers to P.I.I.G.S. Situation, the artist instead was inspiredby ancient legends which associate these insects to the misteries of metamorphosis and resurrection. Cicadas, in facts, spend years underground as larvae and burrow their way out and shed their skin when they are ready to become an adult and fly away. So, abandoned spoils are the frozen state of the exoskeleton of a cicada, eternalised teenage state.

Refe e galle di quercia; ricamo in rafia ed erbe su cartone

Per il Museo Municipal Amadeo De Souza Cardoso Giulia Berra (Cremona, 1985) presenta un progetto in stretto dialogo con l'architettura, che fa riferimento sia al contesto territoriale di Amarante, sia alla situazione socio-economica del Portogallo nel periodo di Residenza. E' una dimensione utopica, dove i richiami al mondo naturale diventano aspirazione al mutamento e alla rinascita.

Fra gli archi di granito prende forma una galassia di galle di quercia raccolte nel Parco cittadino. Si tratta di “perle di legno” sviluppate dalle piante in presenza di parassiti, che in queste escrescenze abnormi trovano un habitat perfetto per portare a termine il loro ciclo vitale. Grazie alla rete, le galle diventano costellazione di mondi e metafora del rapporto dell'uomo con l'ambiente.

Le pareti accolgono invece due pannelli di azulejos realizzati con ricami in rafia su cartone con un motivo di spoglie (resti di muta) di cicala. Se la Favola della Cicala e della Formica sovente viene citata in riferimento ai cosiddetti P.I.I.G.S., l'artista riprende invece antiche leggende che associano questi insetti ai misteri della metamorfosi e della resurrezione. Le cicale, infatti, trascorrono anni sottoterra allo stato larvale, per poi uscire all'aria aperta, mutare completamente forma, abbandonare l'esoscheletro esterno irrigidito nell'antico aspetto e volar via.

Biennale of the Young European Art” is an international art project that represents current trends taking place throughout various types of European art. This multimedia exhibition represents a fresh perspective from original artwork alongside their intensity of expression and innovative concepts rendered in the contemporary arts.                                                                                                   

The main objective is to foster the artistic exchange in the form of a travelling exhibition across the participating countries.  The Exhibition focuses on presenting a wide range of creative abilities and talent from younger artists under the age 35 years old.                                                                                               

The exhibition will display their artistic journey over the last two years and will be represented by eight artists. The opening event in Wrocław will be accompanied by an installation created by Julia Curyło and Liza Sherzai , and will be placed in the city’s center.

The exhibition will display works of fifty six talented younger artists from Europe all of which will uniquely contribute to different fields of visual arts:  painting, graphics, photography, objects, installations and video. Poland will be represnted by:  Miłosz Flis, Michał Frydrych, Marcelina Groń, Kornel Janczy, Berenika Kowalska, Izabela Łęska, Tomasz Poznysz i Magdalena Sawicka. These acclaimed featured artists are recognized for their diversity of attitudes, individualism and the courage in their approach to media.

The initial opening of the Biennale was held in the fall of 2015 at the at the Le Beffroi in Montrouge near Paris, then move through Denmark (Hjørring) and to Poland (Wrocław), then Latvia (Cēsis), and in 2017 further to Italy (Como),Spain (Figueres) and Portugal (Amarante).

JCE...Denmark is coming!

The JCE Biennale for the first time in Danemark, will be guest of the prestigious Vra's exhibition hall, in the city of Hjoerring. The 55 artists of JCE will be revealed in a new exhibition curated by Henrik Godsk.

I'll show there my Fleets of dreams, a fleet of boats as thin as dreams and hopes. The installation, inspired by the situation of Mediterranean Countries, is part of a research which has in Nature its starting point to make visions and narrations about the present, characterized by the use of fragile biological materials. To be watched closely, with respect.

So...fingers crossed for the opening!

La Biennale JCE arriva per la prima volta in Danimarca nella prestigiosa sala espositiva di Vra, in una mostra curata da Henrik Godsk.

Per l'occasione esporrò le mie Flotte di sogni, in cui piume raccolte con pazienza e intrecci di refe danno vita ad una flotta di barche esili come sogni e speranze. L'opera, ispirata all'attualità dei Paesi del Mediterraneo, s'inserisce in una ricerca che vede la Natura come punto di partenza per costruire visioni e narrazioni del contemporaneo, caratterizzata dall'utilizzo di materiali biologici fragili, da osservare da vicino con rispetto.

Notre avenir est dans l'air isn't the only occasion to see my works in October! The day after tomorrow in the wine hills near Verona and Lake Garda opens the exhibition of the finalists of the sculpture prize dedicated to Antonio Canova. I take part to this exhibition with my Fleet of dreams. Fifth edition of the Biennale JCE | Jeune Création Européenne Montrouge, France, 15 October - 3 November 2015

Montrouge welcomes Europe! The Biennale JCE, a group exhibition featuring the works of 56 emerging artists from France, Denmark, Poland, Latvia, Italy, Spain and Portugal, offers a preview of new directions in European art.

The Biennale JCE seeks out new talents as it continues to build its network by forging links to help propel young artists onto the international scene. In 2015, the Biennale opens its doors to Northern and Eastern Europe with the addition of Denmark, Latvia and Poland to its network of partner countries.

The event is an extension of the city of Montrouge’s dynamic cultural policy, which provides strong ongoing support for emerging artists and develops synergies with other European cities. A unique panorama of a new generation of artists, the exhibition provides a veritable map of the hopes, questions and concerns of contemporary artists on the European continent, juxtaposing a variety of artistic approaches and environments, some of which collide while others reso- nate in terms of vision, practice and media.

At the opening, a prestigious jury will award the Grand Prix JCE, which offers scholarships and residencies in Montrouge and Amarante to three of the artists participating in the exhibition. Among the jury members are such personalities from the worlds of art and culture as Matthieu Lelièvre of Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, screenwriter and producer Etienne Comar, MAC/VAL director Alexia Fabre, and Vittoria Matarrese, director of cultural programming at the Palais de Tokyo.

This new edition of the Biennale kicks off a travelling group exhibition that will last nearly two years and will be shown in all the partner cities. From Le Beffroi in Montrouge, it will be shipped north to Hjørring, Denmark, east to Wroclaw, Poland and Cesis, Latvia, and south to Como, Italy, Figueres, Spain, and Amarante, Portugal.

L’artista, la cui opera avrà ottenuto il maggior numero di mi piace, sarà nominato vincitore.

Tra i finalisti, la giuria – composta da Flaminio Gualdoni, Elena Isella, Claudio Grillone, Salvatore Marsiglione,Veronica Vittani – ha selezionato anche i 6 artisti che parteciperanno con una loro opera alla biennale Jeune Création Européenne 2015-2017 e che prenderà il via nel mese di ottobre a Montrouge in Francia e toccherà 8 paesi europei.
